23mm vs 35mm - can only pick one, should I pull the trigger or stick to 18-55 before I'm sure?

It's worth noting that an image taken from the same location with the 23 and 35 yields the same amount of compression. It's the change in camera-subject distance that modifies the perceived compression, not the change in lenses.

All completely true, but of course if you started with an image from the 23, then to end up with the same image that you’d get from the 35, you’d have to crop such that you were left with only half the pixels. (Plus the aperture of a 35\2 is a stop larger than that of a 23\2 so you have a bit more leeway in that respect.)

I mean, you could shoot with a 9mm lens and crop to get the same image you’d get from a 300, but the resolution would differ quite a bit 🙂
