Used Nikkor 70-200 F/2.8 VR1 vs Used Nikkor 70-200 F/4

I am looking for a F-Mount 70-200 lens for general travel and landscape use in national parks visit( think Yellow Stone, Tetons). Currently I have 2 bodies, a D200 and D700, which me and my wife use.

Looking at the used market, both the F/2.8 VR1 and F/4 are the same price. Can I get some perspective from people who have used both or moved from the f/2.8 VR1 to F/4 and vice-versa.

Enumerating what I have found is.

Why F/2.8 VR1

  • Extremely well built.
  • Good for low light.
  • Sharp at center.
  • Lens price has mostly depreciated.

Why not the F/2.8

  • Vignetting in full frame.
  • Heavy

Why F/4

  • Very Sharp
  • Light

Why not the F/4

  • With teleconverter the F number will drop.
  • Lens price should depreciate more.
