Looking at the lineup and reviews., it seems like getting the 16/2.8 is pretty much a no-brainer. Is it?

It's a no-brainer when looking for something really wide, while not willing to spend money on a RF 14/15-35 (yet). Small, lightweight and very affordable. Not fitted with perfect optics, though definitely usefull. Even when cropping out a bit to get rid of the lesser edges and corners it will give you much wider FOV than the 24mm of the 24-105. You could improve things by not applying distortion autocorrection, but correct manually in PP software like PS. You then have even wider FOV (around 15mm) and better sharpness in corners and around edges. This can be OK as long as you don't shoot buildings and so.

Sandor.

There's always the Laowa 15mm f/4 Zero-D rectilinear if you don't want to splurge on the RF 15-35.  That's the route I would go.
