Are you using the ZS100 at default settings? If you are that would account for your perception that Panasonics extended zoom options don't appear to be as effective as other manufacturers. They are using the same components as other manufactuters, nothing bespoke, so the only reason you can have that perception is the camera settings which are way off the mark

In order to improve the images from the camera try:

Contrast +2, Sharpness+2 & Noise Reduction -5. Try and keep the aperture as close to f4.0 as you can and limit iso to 800. You should see a difference and that will translate in to a difference in i-zoom too.
