I’m guessing to an extent it was the only way for a lot of folks to get an R5 or R6 in a timely fashion. My local shop has these kitted, but no body only in stock. So get the kit, sell the kit lens, and buy the lens you want.
Right ? They really are like new ?
Most the them are like new it is true. When I bought my EOS R just after it came out on the market the RF24-240 was being sold white box at some Photostores on Ebay for $600. It was too cheap to pass up for me so I bought one to try out with low expectations.
I was shocked by how well the corrected JPEGS looked throughout the full zoom range. Previously in forty years of trying I never had a 10X superzoom work so well and in some cases I paid big bucks for L superzooms in the past. Apparently for a short period of time when EOS R was just introduced there many lens aficionados that did not like this lens's uncorrected RAW image at 22mm FL and bailed on the lenses at dealers where they were being sold as part of a newly introduced EOS R kits. The correction operation in the camera crops the 22mm FL image to 24mm frame size to get rid of the very ugly corner images.
I would like to thank Canon for making these computer correction aware lenses for people like me. The RF 24-240 is not a L but in image quality it is as good IMO as many of L lenses once it is corrected. Others free to disagree as I am sure they will. I also own the RF 24-105f4L which has a constant zoom aperture hand for video work. It is also weather sealed for harsh climates. The RF 24-104mm RAW image requires a lot less process but note it did cost a lot more. However, IMO is has to my surprise just an equivalent IQ as the RF24-240mm for the same FL. Both are excellent IQ IMO. I am glad Canon offers these variants over this most popular of focal ranges.
I have found PL5 does a better job at raw conversion than the Canon software DPP.
PL5 is not very fast on my computer though.
The raw converter in my RP is very fast and not too bad.
I only have two lenses for it. 100MM L and 35MM STM.
I also am a fan of the corrections built into DXO Photolab 5. It is my primary editing software.
