And they (young generation) are actually right. Such electronic viewfinders have almost unlimited ways to get better and better. To gain not only higher quality of viewing, but to get a lot of useful features well. So, if the best EVFs haven't yet surpassed the best OVFs, withing a few years they will! This is guaranteed.

I really don't think so. There are some hard limits - for example, EVFs still play by the exposure rules; and any improvement here has to be an improvement in the sensors themselves. And display technology isn't evolving that fast.

Based on my experience, I'd say EVFs will continue to incrementally improve, but not in the areas which makes them a not-so-good option for me. They don't offer any advantage to me, the appeal of the mirrorless is rather the powerful AF systems included in current generation models. As you say, just a tool.

Of course, I don't expect any breakthrough in the OVF itself. We had the new, high refraction glass pentaprism - and it does make a difference; can't wait to see a FF version. But the next area of significant  progress might be linked to the quick return mirror system, and with the information display systems, rather than with the viewfinder's optics.
