Then I looked through the viewfinder. Tolerable at best. No dynamic range to the image at all. Everything looked like a cyber nightmare.

This is something what I do not understand. Such a modern EVF should not be inferior to any good PC monitor. So, if you are not happy with your monitor/TV dynamic range, then how are you watching your pictures?
I recently acquired a new 4k 32-inch monitor that can display nearly 100% sRGB and does very well with my K1 files. I am quite happy with it contrary to your assumption.
I don't suppose that you print them all. But yes, I haven't tried mirrorless, though occasionally I use the LV mode, which on Pentax cameras might not be as good as the recent Canon EVF.
So you haven't tried mirrorless. Thanks for your input.

Sorry Matt, I didn't intend to make you feel offended, no, not at all. I just really don't have any experience with EVFs, though I just assume that a modern EVF is at least as good as my PC monitor, which is a 24" HD device. I am watching all my pictures on it and I am perfectly satisfied with everything, i.e. resolution, colours and dynamic range as well. Of course, with a far better monitor you have a completely different experience, and going back to a less advanced device can be felt immediately, as we were discussing it with Roland.
But one thing I am sure on 100%. The EVFs will become more and more advanced and the OVFs more and more expensive . This is clearly seen on the K3/III price. And I am sure that I will survive with my Pentax cameras, but they will be dead at the same moment when I am gone. My kids/grandchildren, whenever they grab my camera(s), they are willing to use only LV mode. When I point them to look through the OVF, they reply: are you kidding grandpa .
