When camera is placed in M mode, and exposure set, the image in EVF does not change when turning the flash unit on or off. A guidebook from Thom Hogan also seems to suggest that the final image, simulating the additional input of flash, is not previewed in EVF. I have no knowledge on how more recent models of these MILC or strobes handle that pre exposure EVF scenario.

For your other scenario, when I place a window in background and use highlight weighted metering, the interior foreground furniture appears dark in EVF with flash on or off. The exposure of interior furniture is easily controlled with flash in final image, but is not evident in the preexposure EVF.

Wanting a camera to simulate or estimate light that simply is not there before the flash is fired is a lot to ask IMO. There is a reason for pre-flashes in TTL systems ... You would have to estimate not only the light emission of the flash (which is also influenced by its swivel and angle) but also the light reflection of unknown and not through the lens visible surfaces. Even with AI that's a formidable task, I think ...

I guess something like this may be possible up to a point for on-board flashes (limited power, fixed position) and for sensors with very high dynamic range.
