Then I looked through the viewfinder. Tolerable at best. No dynamic range to the image at all. Everything looked like a cyber nightmare.

This is something what I do not understand. Such a modern EVF should not be inferior to any good PC monitor.

Why not? There are two main differences:

- miniaturization, we have tiny EVF screens with 3-4 million dots (in comparison, a 4K screen has about 8 millions pixels, on an incomparably larger area)

- viewing conditions, with the EVF the only light is the backlight's

and that's at the most superficial glance.

The first might very well impact DR.

Alex

Also, until recently they used OLED and HDR eventually, but still used the usual S curve of JPEGS to tone map, as I just discovered here:

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/2575223440/canon-eos-r3-s-ovf-simulation-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters

That seems stupid, but some really did that, put an OLED screen displaying an image developed for a low DR intent !

Then of course, HDR or not, as you said the EVF is limited by the max light intensity it can reach - the good side is you can't damage your eyes when you aim at the Sun. OVF brightness means that the view is "obscured" compared to the real scene (but remains proportional I suppose), but EVF brightness is a hard max limit.

Sorry guys (Alex, Jeremie),

I do not believe that the modern EVF are so "poor"! Actually, this part of the (mirrorless) cameras went through an immense development in the last years, especially for the only purpose, to make EVF as good/attractive as OVF! I hope I will have an opportunity to check some modern EVF sometimes .

But this was about EVFs being inferior than good PC monitors. Are these EVFs as good as a calibrated Eizo?

OTOH I've seen different generations of EVFs, and in some cases the improvements were dramatic.

Alex

Now we are getting somewhere . So, you Alex are admitting that there are (in some cases ) dramatic improvements (of EVFs).

Nothing to admit here, it's public knowledge.

Although I'd say "there were", not "there are". As technology matures, improvement slows down.

And apparently you respect the Eizo monitor. So, it's not impossible that in a short time there will be EVFs of a similar quality.

Nope. Size does matter. And I doubt EVFs are anywhere near 99% Adobe RGB

But I believe that even today's EVFs are great, that they can deliver similar images like my HD monitor and TV. Definitely I wouldn't complain about a limited DR.

OK... you decide how much DR is enough for you.

What I would miss is something else. My grandson has a mirrorless camera (G7 or so) and whenever I grab it I am disappointed that I do not see anything in the viewfinder if I don't turn on the camera! This bothers me far more than a limited DR. Because I always at first look through my Pentax OVF and only if what I see is worth to be taken I turn on the camera .

One of the things that annoys me a lot with EVFs is the smearing. Can't really fix that, it's because you are seeing the world in frames. But I'm not seeing that being mentioned often, I'd guess not many are bothered by it...
