Yes, tried R5 vs Z7

I tried a Canon R5, that has the same EVF as the R6 you tried, and the EVF image stutter was very annoying for me, including when set at 120 fps (smooth view in the menu). That setting did not actually do a difference with EVF stutter, showing that the EVF specs are not the entire story. Sensor readout speed and processing power are at least as important. If given a Canon R5, I will most likely not use it much, even with its great AF and tracking etc.

The Nikon Z7 EVF was more bearable, even if it has lower EVF resolution and framerate than the Canon R5. I read that it has an EVF lag of about 25 ms.

One solution for decreasing the lag is relying on dedicated pixels from the sensor for feeding the EVF and AF, like presumably the Z9 has (6 millions of them). This is paying a (slight?) price in image quality. For people wanting speed this is acceptable.

I still much prefer an OVF and LCD live view for what I do (mostly hand held macrophotography with flash and tripod work). When using the flash and high magnification, the OVF loses nothing exposure simulation- and focus accuracy-wise compared to an EVF.

One of the biggest advantages of the OVF is being totally free of temporal artifacts - which ensures a much more enjoyable experience.
