Yes, the EVF lags.  It can be hard to keep the small focus point on the dog.  On where the dog's eye actually is in real time since you are seeing a lagging video of it in the EVF.  You can use a larger focus area box and let the camera select the point if the subject is really moving erratically.  Easier to keep the large box on the subject.

I use servo AF and spend a moment or two letting the servo track before fully pressing the shutter.  It also gives me a chance to establish that I am tracking the subject.  Servo seems to do a pretty good job.

You will miss more action shots with the R than the newer R6 or R5 but you will still get a decent number of good shots.
