That's an interesting point. Does the barrel correction even matter given the resolution potential of a 1" optic that's already being "stretched" if you will? I'll say the reviewing the samples DPR put up, not really. They nailed it on both counts that the G5X II isn't exactly a resolution king, and, the lens corners aren't being impacted with any significance by the barrel corrections.

The G5X lens is no worse than the G7X one for sharpness given a decent copy and better than any of the 1" panasonics . The whold "G5X-II lens is soft" thing is a total myth - it just would seem that Canons sample variation for lenses is still as lousy as ever it was in the early DSLR / Digital Ixus / S30/40/70 days . I`ve witnessed a real bad G5X-II but mine is bang on as was my G7X Mk1

I`ve no idea what`s going on in the DPR sample or their copy of the camera but I get very sharp images uncorrected from mine even at the edges just like the G7X but then I`m using a proper RAW converter and not Lightroom which adds all sorts of hidden stuff behind the scenes which you can`t turn off .

I actually really liked that review Pitman put up; the author/videographer made excellent points regarding usability, common focal length usage, lens speed and rendering, SOOC rendition in favor of the G5X II, and video, autofocus and reach of the RX100 VII.

Now granted I gather Pitman is here to "sell" the RX100 VII, but I found that well rounded.

We get into these brand wars where the one you've chosen must win, but the reality is there are other options each with it's own pros and cons.

Regarding copy variance, although everyone is guilty, including Sony which DPR themselves wrote about in one of their RX100 reviews (can't remember which), for the price we pay for these things, it's inexcusable. Does someone buy a Tesla and is okay with chipping paint? Do people buy houses with problems at close? The reality is we do (both true stores), often because we compromise, we want the car now while it's in stock, we want to move in sooner. The reality is that's a ton of money be it for a camera, car or house, to settle for less than what we paid for.

The shame here is most folks can't pick up when it's a "bad" copy, and fixing it requires sending back, where like a contractor for a house, will say it's just fine...

Life is full of imperfect, but I'll say I don't take a good camera or house for granted these days. Folks of all trades have trouble with well, delivering what was promised. These days there isn't a house you can close on that's new without a problem or a camera / lens without some kind of defect is the reality. Even Roger C from LensRentals acknowledges just be happy with one that meets spec (which is most of them) and that seeking the perfect copy isn't realistic, just knowing to return the one that's not meeting spec. Just like a house, or car, it ain't perfect, it just met code.

Too bad there's no code for lenses, well I'm sure Canon/Sony have one, and that code they enforce may be somewhat generous, again, especially for the price of some of these things.
