Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II review
Let's take a quick look at distortion correction on the G5 X II. One area of concern some people may have with these compacts is the degree of 'baked-in' distortion corrections - the G5 X II, like most compacts of this type, has some pretty extreme corrections done at the wide end of its zoom range.
However, as you can see in lower-left crop of a scene at 24mm, there's not much (if any) image quality impact for final images, because it doesn't look like the camera is really capturing enough detail to provide sharp corners at wide-angle settings regardless of whether the corrections are enabled or not.
.
That's an interesting point. Does the barrel correction even matter given the resolution potential of a 1" optic that's already being "stretched" if you will? I'll say the reviewing the samples DPR put up, not really. They nailed it on both counts that the G5X II isn't exactly a resolution king, and, the lens corners aren't being impacted with any significance by the barrel corrections.
PhotoReview has imatested both the latest RX100 and the G5X II, neither are good or bad per se...

The RX100 VII is hitting 2800 lines at 9mm, vs the G5X II is hitting 2800 lines also by 21.6mm. They're both peaking at 2800 lines though interestingly enough, which is a respectable number, but compared to the 3400 lines the G1X Mark III puts out, or some of the EF-M lenses which output 3300 lines at 24MP, yeah, 1" is 1". That 1" is sacrificing sheer image quality, but, it picks up portability and faster newer sensors in that these are Sony sensors, stacked BSI at that.
