I just used my new G5xii at a dance show along side of my Nikon D7200 (crop sensor DSLR) with f/2.8 18-55 lens.

I will say that I was super impressed by the results I got from the G5xii in comparison. I will go so far as to say that on occasion, because of the longer zoom on the G5xii a few of the shots actually came out better than the DSLR shots.

I'm not a professional, but the shots really came out very nice for such a small package and are very presentable in this low light dancing environment.

The things that make the G5X II special, in my book, the lens, pocket ability, and the EVF.

Although obvious, it's easy to overlook the obvious as we get into arguments over JPEG engine rendering, sensor performance, etc etc.

That lens, married to its sensor, gives unprecedented reach combined with light gathering capability married in such a small package.

To your point, trying to find a lens of equivalence in APS-C, is much bigger, or doesn't in fact exist because superzoom that cover 24-120, are much slower, and, give compromise in optical quality. The G5X II lens is neither slower nor does it suffer superzoom optical deficiency as far as I can tell. And, it fits in a pocket, with an EVF. It's impressive for what it is.

Offerings like the G1X Mark II, although should be superior, due to older sensor implementations, and older lens technology, and without a pop-up EVF; I have to say the G5X II supersedes it not just for a symbolic perspective, it supersedes it outright and the G1X II was a force to be reckoned with in terms of low light gathering married to reach in small form factor.

The G5X II really shines in low light environments where you need to be discrete, or don't feel like "carrying", or can't for whatever reason (think restricted venues, etc).
