Thanks for the really interesting review of this camera and opinions from others. I have been looking at the G5X MK II recently. My Sony RX100 MK1 has failed due to sand ingress. I shoot Jpeg (I dont enjoy editing) mainly on the beach and around the coast in a variety of weather conditions. I know this camera isnt weather sealed but is it any less prone to sucking in dust, dirt etc than the Sony? I am really struggling to find a pocketable camera with decent zoom and good IQ that is suitable for my use. I found the zoom range on the Sony a bit limiting.
I never had any problems with any of my Canon's, including the G5X II with it sucking in dust, but I also do guard them from sand. To date I've had a S110, G1X Mark II, G1X Mark III, and the G5X Mark II. No issues. I have had issues with some kind of non-cleanable matter on the sensor of my EOS M3, which I had for nearly 3 years and swapped lenses on it ALOT, so stuff does happen, but Canon does a good job on their point and shoots and the new EOS R's with the auto-closing shutter to protect them.
Based off what you've said, the G5X II is the best fit, but, it's not weather sealed so it could become a problem some day. I haven't read any reports from others here, but I'll say if it can happen to a non-Canon camera, it can happen to a Canon. Interestingly enough, we have few reports of dust in lens around here (PowerShot forum) comparatively to other platforms (Sony, Panasonic). I don't hear much from Fuji btw. But, the Fuji X100 series is a fixed lens, that may have something to do with it as it has lens moving parts to "suck in" outside material.
