Re: So I got a G5X Mk2 - My thoughts
1
It's true that buying my G5X II after my G7X was 90% a
waste (the 10% non waste being for the 20mm extra reach) but the G5X II fits in my coat pocket and does 99% of the job that my 6d II with my many excellent lens does and which I use essentially at home or at friends' (for very special occasions) and mostly with my 35mm F/2 IS.
the "none-waste" for me was always the EVF , popup it maybe but essential for those of us getting longer sighted with age more than anything , increases stability massively too .. the lens improvements in RAW I`m finding is a bonus , less distortion and other aberrations makes for less corrections etc than the G7X lens - I find the difference between 100 and 120mm is minor but the quality difference regarding aspeherical element generated oddities , CA etc at full zoom is a benefit to the new lens .
the disappointment for the cam comes from that they didn`t move the AF on much from the G7X mk1 and even 10yr old panasonics make the clumsy large "spot" AF point and lack of AF features look positively archaic - not good in a pocket compact which costs more than a number of DPAF powered EOS_M kits (almost as much as a basic M6-II Kit without the EVF even ) let alone other capable mirrorless cams like the Pan GX9 and Oly EM10-IV .. Sony RX100 models have lots of issues too , more lens issues (full zoom rather than wide end) , pathetic stabilzation (most noticed in the MK6 and 7) , poor ergonomics and sonys illogical Obtuse stand on having poor touchscreen operation / lack of grip on their RX100 series ...
As an alrounder stills cam I see the G5X Mk as the best of a compromised bunch overall - as for video , at these sizes may as well use the phone , esp if it has 3 cameras like the Iphone 11-Pro onwards and latest samsungs ..
