Are there really bad lenses at this price? That goes for both the 24-70 and 70-200.

I get that no product has 0% failure in production, but they must surely have quality checks at this price point?

And will a so called bad copy result in a lens just a slightly less sharp?

You bet it CAN happen. Way back in the day when the first EF24-70 f2.8L came out (If I recall it was around 2002) I had a 1D setup and tried to buy a 24-70 f2.8L. I went to Pictureline when Iived in Salt Lake City back then. They pulled out their entire inventory of 6 of them and ALL were defective with excessive CA and bad focus at 70mm. So they were going to send them all back. I did end up ordering some time later one of them from B&H and it was just fine. So you bet it's possible. I would strongly encourage you, if you want that focal length, to try another but this time from B&H if you can. With their easy return policy there's NO risk and it's faster and easier to deal with. I'll bet you dollars to donuts you'll get a stellar copy this time around.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.
