I realize that ideal will be highly "subjective" but I'm shopping a round for a full-frame fixed prime lens for my Sony a7 IV body.

I've read several reviews and articles were most users are recommending 85mm. In the past, when I had my APS-C DSLR, I was using a 35mm lens (52.5mm equivalent) but found that I was a little close to my subject.

Thoughts / suggestions?

If 50mm you said is too close then 35mm would be your pick but I considered that as an environment portrait lens. If you want single lens do it all then get the new 70-200mm f2.8 GM II, it’s light and can handle anything, portrait is great also.

Having own 24GM, 35GM, 50mm f1.4, 85GM, 135GM. The new 70-200GM II is my new favorite lens
