I quite like the idea of using an L-bracket on the adapter, if one can be found that fits without interfering with other aspects of the camera/lens ergonomics. The advantage would be that one could swap quickly between horizontal and vertical at exactly 90 degrees while retaining alignment, and the assembly wouldn't become unbalanced, compared to flipping the ball head or other platform. Also there would be little or no mechanical disadvantage compared to flipping the head, as the weight would still be borne by the 1/4-20 screw attachment of the L-plate to the adapter foot.

One thing I noticed when trying my mount adapter on several different L-brackets is it works better with a generic bottom plate rather than the dedicated ones that cradle the bottom of the camera. Some of the dedicated plates leave part of the adapter foot hanging in space, or worse, can't be attached at all.
