Canon R5 8K RAW video - strange "contrast banding" horizontally. Normal?
Mar 27, 2022
Hello,
I am reaching out to the community to see if my camera is malfunctioning or not. I am a new Canon R5 owner with a RF-to-EF adapted Tamron 35mm f/1.4 lens (I have a few other EF lenses).
Settings: ISO 800 (native for CLOG3), 1/60th, F/3.5, 8K-D 23.98FPS, RAW-lite. bt.2020 color space.
I noticed something strange - bright stripe objects (sunlight coming through blinds for instance) creates horizontal dark stripes follow the bright light stripes. It can be very apparent in ungraded 8K RAW CLOG, CLOG3 footage and in certain cases, its still there in 4K "standard" (no CLOG) but less noticeable.
My first thought it is: something is wrong with the camera. The problem is repeatable but I've never noticed any of this when recording outside. I do not think its a lens-flare problem. I think this is sensor problem. Even pointing the camera at my laptop with the white program menu strip across the top, that bleeds off into the sides as well. I am sorry for the lousy screenshots.

Is this to be expected? Please note: I do not know anything about color grading and barely know how to use zebras for exposure. I see most of the video data is in the far left of the histogram. I am sure my exposure is way off. But this is a strange VHS analog looking artifact that I find very concerning.
I have also included the source RAW-lite file for you to download . (500mb file) Perhaps DaVinci Resolve users could provide any input?
Thank you so much for reading and I appreciate any help. This Canon R5 was a massive purchase for me and I am worried my camera might be malfunctioning.
