I've read a lot about the 828... in Japanese.
If anyone is intersted, go to http://www.sony.ca

Click on Consumer Electronics, Digital cameras, Cyber-shot, then scroll to bottom of the screen and click on the 828.

So what is new on this site?
I could see only high price - $1499 before taxes (!).... + shipping cost...
It's ridiculous

Hi all,

Note that the site list the Teleconverter under the accessories, but not the Wideangle Converter.

Does that tell us something. Maybe the Wideconverter is too heavy, but the tele is OK and Sony dare to list it, or was that a mistake as some suggested?

Just a thot .... have a nice day. :D

It says "rotating lens". I hope this means swivel lens, and not rotating! Would make using a polarizer a pain!

And what is "smart zoom"?

Yes, I know it, so + 7%+8% and it will be about 1700 CAD! Buy it in e-cost or similar e-store an you will get it much cheaper. Canadian prices are TOOO high, IMHO.

Well, anyway it's not in stock at the moment. I would like to see real samples taken by real camera first :)

Yes, that is $1499. Canadian. You have to convert.

$1 U.S. is the equivalent to about 1/2 a condominium (in Canada)

Sad, eh?

Ummm... no. The price listed on that site is already in Canadian
dollars. At the time of this writing 1,499.99 CAD = 1,133.18 USD.
Sounds better, no?

Roy.
No, it sounds as was,

especially for me who live in Canada, ON. I have to pay 1499 CAD (equal 1133US - thnx for calculations) plus additional 15% (GST & PST or so).

Ah, those 15% are taxes. That I did not know. Thanks for correcting me.

It says here:

---------------------

"Get up to 470 shots with a Memory Stick media per one charge of your battery. The Stamina InfoLITHIUM M battery gives you the power you need to go anywhere without worrying about losing battery power."
---------------------

So does this mean that you don't get this same battery life with Compact Flash?

If this is true why not and what is the expected battery life with CF?...

Yeah, but even if we order from the US that 15% tax gets added at the border.

well, let's compare. Go to http://www.ECost.com for example.

Sony Cybershot DSC-F828, 8 Megapixel Digital Camera

USD $949.00

then go to "Canadian customers" and calculate the price:

CAD $1290.74

Subtotal: $1290.74

Shipping:
Standard - 5-14 business days $6.07
Handling: $14.65

GST / HST: $91.80

PST: $103.26

Total Price: $1506.52 (CAD including taxes)

So, I would say that it's a little bit less than you can find @ http://www.henrys.ca or similar Canadian sites.

One more thing - they say nothing about duty. I don't know - maybe it can be added to this price.

Just to add to the confusion, consider this!

Phil's earlier review, available on this site, detailed the battery for the 828 as the Infolithium NP-FM50, which is the same battery as in your 707/717. I would stake money on this being exactly what was in the camera he evaluated.

"Stamina InfoLITHIUM M battery" in the blurb could be a change of specs, or the "spin" from the Sony marketing dept copywriters.

The only thing we know for sure, is that anybdy who knows for sure, sure isn't talking.

Located in Canada I have puchased several items from US sites. Generally you save money on the deal, especially with Sony products which are invariably retailed at a higher level in Canada than the mere exchange rate difference.

I have never paid anything above the GST and PST charges at the Canadian border. Either carrying the merchandise across, or having the item shipped into Canada.

Be very careful about shipping costs, and verify them before committing to the deal. Many US mail order companies have no idea of Canada's geographic location, or the economics of shipping into Canada and sometimes resort to a chart of international shipping costs that seems outrageous even if shipping to Australia ;-)

I would be very leery of the US$6.07 quoted on the above deal for shipping a camera into Canada. We live in hopes though, it might just be real.

Also consider and verify the carrier being used. I have been burned by some charging a fee for processing cross border transactions. UPS comes to mind - recently a Can$30 fee for a US$20 product. Others can charge varying amounts.

You also have to consider: Sony gives a 90 day warranty in the US. 1 year in Canada. Warranty claims to Sony can be complicated when you have to ship the merchandise twice across international borders. With a new high technology product like the 828 this risk is even higher, especially if you are in the first wave of purchasers.

I have saved hundreds if not thousands buying from US mail order, but for the last reason above I will probably pay the $1500 at Henry's for my 828.

Just my 2 cents, or non cents
