Thanks for all that great info!
For some added details, I mostly shoot the family, nature, travel, etc. So biggest strain on the AF is keeping up with the kids. Current lenses are a Tamron 28-105/2.8; 50mm prime; and a basic tele that will probably be replaced at some point.
It's not worth it to stick with Canon aps-c for these lenses alone. The 50mm is cheap as chips, you will replace the tele anyway, and the Tamron is probably too old to AF well with mirrorless bodies.
If your looking fur just a body and an affordable slow kit lens, M might be fine. But if you want to have a very good standard zoom, maybe Sony is a better idea.
I'm trying to figure out what my budget is! Doing research to see what is even reasonable with current lineups.
I didn't realize that the M50 was so basic with dials, etc., but now that I look at it I can see it. I really like using dials for changing aperture, exp comp, etc., without having to take my eye away from composing. That might be a deal breaker. Especially when combined with the battery life!
You can toggle functions for the dial with a button. It's not a big deal.
I think I'll have to rule out the M6 based on lack of EVF. Even though I shoot with my iPhone looking at the screen when doing so I really miss being able to look through a view finder and focus on what I'm doing. Not to mention problems with sun and not being able to see the screen as much as I'd like.
I'll add the M5 to the list. Looks like it's several years old, but then again so is my 7D! Any reason to think that it's not up to speed with other modern cameras? I just remember reading about Canon lagging behind other companies early in their mirrorless cameras and didn't know which cameras those were.
Maybe it's worth it to move to another brand?
Yes, you should investigate this, as your current lenses aren't worth it to stick with Canon.
I know I've read about Sony, Oly, Fuji, etc., with mirrorless cameras but really haven't followed along over recent years. And then I'm buying all new lenses as well so more money.
The thinking should start with the lenses, not the body. I won't cover this whole subject here, but I will try to highlight a few key questions:
- Do you want a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 as a standard zoom (Sony), or a 15-45mm or a 18-150mm (Canon)? The 15-45mm is affordable but dark, the 18-150mm gives you reach and avoids lens changes, but is relatively expensive for the light gathering capability you get.
- do you love wide angle and compactness? The ef-m 11-22mm is a reason to choose Canon over Sony here.
- don't care about weight in low light? A used sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 on the adapter will work great with either the M50(1or2) or M6II. AF speed is also great.
Hmmm.
Thanks again for all the help!

45 is more than enough, but 500.000 isn't
