Opinions on R5C (vs others)
1

Hi guys, I’m considering the R5C and would love to get some opinions…

I’ve been working primarily with still images and coming from a Canon DSLR, now wanting to move into mirrorless as well as needing to move into some video to support and promote my two businesses.

On the photo side I’ll be shooting band portraits as well as product shots for an apparel brand, as well as reference shoots for illustration type projects. On the video end, I’ll be shooting music videos for a band, band rehearsals and studio footage, as well as promo video ads for an apparel brand.

I picked up the BMPCC4K for video as I love the look this can produce as similar to film, and love that it can shoot raw. Aesthetically I tend to love an organic, softer cinematic look closer to film, versus say a super overly sharp and clinical corporate video. I rigged it up a bit and it’s ready to go in controlled settings for planned shoots.

Now I’m needing another cam that can be my primary photo cam as well as B-video cam to the Pocket, but with a little more practicality for run and gun things, especially being that I’ll be doing a lot of solo shooting, even filming myself sometimes. So naturally I though of the R5C. I like some of the footage I’ve seen online that does not have an overly digital/clinical look that many modern mirrorless video cams can have (although it can most certainly produce that type of image if desired and that’s fine too). As an aside, I also love the C70 footage even more for that organic filmic look, however I don’t think I could swing a combo of say the C70 and the R6 simultaneously.

I like that the R5C has autofocus that the Pocket 4K does not. I like that it can shoot some raw codecs, also the ability to add the Tascam audio unit on top. Overall I like that it opens up some more of the ‘cinema cam’ features for video that the R6 doesn’t do as much. So I’m seriously considering the R5C as it could fill the needs of both photo & secondary video for sure.

However, I’m having trouble deciding between that and the R6. Knowing the R5C has better specs for both photos & video, I’m just wondering if it’s overkill for my needs? For example, I don’t plan to shoot in 8K much, however I do see myself using the 4K codecs mostly, and even excited to try some of the cropped in Super 35 options which allow something like 5.9k or even 2.9k Raw etc. And I’m wondering about dealing with some of the necessities such as large file sizes and editing, media space and battery life of the R5C.

The R6 obviously can also do both photo and video fairly well too. I’m sure I could get by with it on the photo end, and perhaps even on the video end too but really not sure yet.

So I’’m left with some questions: 1. would the R5C pair well with the Pocket 4K? 2. Is the R5C easy enough of learn for someone coming from photo background and getting into video? 3. Are the R6 and the R5C both equally easy to use, especially compared with the BMPCC4K? 4. Are the large file sizes, hard drive space, high editing specs/power & battery life cumbersome enough issues to lean me towards the R6? 5. If I preordered the R5C now, when could I realistically have it I hand?

Ultimately, which camera would you choose given my intended uses?

Thanks so much for any insights!
