Shooting Video with a EOS M
2

I have never owned a digital camera before and purchased the following with the intention of shooting video:

EOS M body, and a 35mm 1.6 tv lens w/ adapter, also a battery, charger, and card.

The camera fires up fine, The lens (screw-on) fits on the camera with the canon ring. I understand that the lens and body can't 'talk' to one another, as the lens doesn't have contact pins to connect to the body. (figured out via the menu how to override that).

I've been able to snap some stills, but when I set the camera to record video, a press of the shutter button just takes a still shot. When the camera is set to manual movie mode, the screen is black and I can't seem to record video.

The manual is a bit overwhelming and I sense that maybe the only way to record video is to get a dedicated Canon lens (w/ contact pins), or to get the 'magic lantern' software that the guy in the video recommends, which is something I'd rather not do until I can get the camera working with the parameters that came with it.

Any suggestions are most appreciated!
