Is there any special device necessary to charge the RP via USB?

Yup, the charger (and the cable) has to be a USB-C PD rated charger.

If you have a recent laptop that is charged by via USB-C instead of something proprietary, that will do.

Oh no, again another charger... 😞

My Lumix, Sonys can be charged with any charger. Thanx for your feedback.

No, one charger. Finally.
The problem with USB charging has always been that the USB spec only permits 5V, 0.5A power, which is very little power. Various schemes came about for detecting whether more current can be drawn, but finally, they came up with PD, which stands for Power Delivery. Now there’s a way for USB devices to communicate over USB to determine all of the different Volt/Amp combinations available, all the way up to 100 Watts of power.

Canon cameras with USB-C draw 9V, 3Amps, so a 27 or 30 Watt USB supply will work, OR you can use a higher Wattage power supply; the camera will only draw the current it needs; the power supply doesn’t “push” power into the device and no overload condition will occur. USB-C charging is taking over nearly everything because of this, and it’s a great solution.

Two examples: Canon and Apple were proprietary charging systems for decades. Now they’re both USB-C based. My latest Mac laptop can use any USB-C PD power adapter to charge, although if it’s under 65 Watts it will charge very slowly.
