Is there any special device necessary to charge the RP via USB?

Yup, the charger (and the cable) has to be a USB-C PD rated charger.

If you have a recent laptop that is charged by via USB-C instead of something proprietary, that will do.

Oh no, again another charger... 😞

My Lumix, Sonys can be charged with any charger. Thanx for your feedback.

Not sure which you have, but do they require USB-C? If so you may already have something suitable. My R5 (and I believe the RP) can be charged using any USB-C supply, it doesn't need to be PD. The camera must be switched off - see below.

(But NB - a USB-A supply with a USB-C plug on the other end of the cable is effectively an adapter and doesn't count! Still that will work for many devices, even my brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus for example, but not Canon's bodies.)

What does require PD specifically, and I think this is where sushipep has got mixed up, is using an external power source to operate the camera. That must be PD, and at least 9V 3A which roughly corresponds to a 30W supply or better. It's worth investing in a powerbank and/or a power brick which complies with this - a lower-power PD device such as many attractively-small power banks would be a mistake.
