Review of Voigtlander X-Mount Nokton 35mm f1.2 lens
3
I bought the Voigtlander X-mount Nokton 35mm f1.2 to replace the Kipon iBerit 35mm f2.4 that I have been using with my X-T2. There is little difference in the size and weight between the Voigtlander and Kipon and both are made out of metal and glass with no plastic, unless it's hidden on the inside.
Besides the faster f1.2 aperture, which I'm not sure how much I will actually use since I mostly shoot at f5.6 and f8, the big advantage of the Voigtlander is the electric contacts that provide the aperture and other information to an X-T2, currently at firmware version 4.40. X-T2s not at the latest firmware version, plus X-Pro2s and other older bodies will not communicate with the lens and see it a fully manual dumb lens. Since there is no A setting on the aperture ring, I'm assuming the lens can only be used in aperture priority or full manual.
I mostly like to shoot landscape, travel, and vintage colonial era buildings since I live in New England, where they are plentiful. So on the way home tonight, I took a couple of quick test shots to verify the lens and its electronics were working. Basic setup was the X-T2 with the Voigtlander X-Mount Nokton 35mm f1.2 using FujiWeekly's Agfa Optima 200 Film Recipe.
I've encountered two issues using this lens with the X-T2.
- The lens has 46mm filter threads and comes with a small matching metal hood that also has 46mm threads at both ends. I mounted a B+W 46mm F-Pro 010 MC UV filter between the lens and hood for protection and then tried it on the end of the hood. In both cases, the filter bound to the hood and needed some effort to separate from the hood. The B+W filter ring is brass, which tends to bind less than aluminum. I'm guessing the hood is aluminum.
- For whatever reason, the X-T2 thinks the X-Mount Nokton 35mm f1.2 is a video T-lens and was reporting the aperture setting in T-stops instead of F-stops until I changed SET UP / SCREEN SET-UP / APERTURE FOR CINEMA LENS from T NUMBER TO F NUMBER. Since I purchased my lens from the Voigtlander Distributor, I've sent an email to the him, outlining this problem.
