One thing that bears emphasizing is motion, whether subject or camera, has a disproportionate impact in macro shooting.  Flash can help, but you may then need to think about diffusers etc.

Natural light shooting outdoors can be a real challenge, especially hand-held at higher stops for greater DOF.  Longer lenses magnify camera shake.  And so forth.  Then there's subject movement!

All these things are why it's important to just get out there and start shooting.

This past summer where I live was exceptionally wet, so we had a profusion of mushrooms and other fungi.  Who'd have thought there was so much interesting growth on the floor of wooded areas?  Who'd have thought that you can actually get sharp shots outdoors, in the woods, on a cloudy day, without flash?  I used a tripod...

Be an opportunist.  Experiment.
