70d review after a few months
10

Hi all,

This will be my final review of the 70d for wildlife. I have had this camera for a few months now, and have been using it extensively with my sigma 150-600 contemporary. This is my first “ real” camera.
The build quality is very good. It does not feel to heavy for me, the size is fine, and the button/dial placement is actually quite good.

The menu system is easy to use. I find it nice how I can customize quite a few of the buttons, including back button AF. This brings us to the autofocus.

AF: The spot AF is very accurate, and quite fast. I rarely have any issues with it. However, for BIF I tend to lean more toward the nine point zone AF. It is a bit jumpy and misses Arjuna 40% of the time. With a bird against the sky or pure blue water, I’ll use it. If it’s against a busier background, I’ll switch to the single point, even for BIF.

The ISO performance is ok. It’s what you’d expect on a crop sensor. I can confidently go up to ISO 1600 without much issue. Once I get higher, I prefer to use at least a little noise reduction p, especially against a darker background. With a decent amount of noise reduction, I can get away with ISO 4000, and against a light background, sometimes even 6400. But anything higher is pretty much unusable.

The actual image quality is quite good, but I know that doesn’t have much impact from the camera than the lens.

I haven’t used it much for video, as I prefer to take images. It’s very difficult for that aspect with the LCD screen being the only option.

Here are some of my vest shots yet.
