Why small spot without tracking?

I just found that with most smaller, fast moving birds (like warblers) in or around foliage it was easier to track the bird manually using a small spot than let the camera track it (or use expand spot) and inevitably have the focus jump to branches or leaves. When I started bird photography I thought tracking was an obvious thing to use, but experience (and advice from a few other bird photographers) led me to using non-tracking AF in many non-flight cases. It'll obviously depend on the type/size of bird and the surroundings, but manual tracking can sometimes be more reliable than letting the camera do it, although it does require more concentration to keep the spot on the bird as it flits around.
