SX50 to DSLR?
1

TLDR: I have an SX50 and am thinking about a SLR to compliment/replace it

........

I am maybe possibly considering a DSLR..

I started "real" photography in the early 80s with a Ricoh SLR that was a graduation gift. My dad had one and that's what they bought me, probably so I'd stop stealing his.

I used that camera for over 20 years. My favorite lens was a fixed 135, but I did have a zoom that I enjoyed as well (up to 300). I had filters and other sorts of fun things. Everything was manual and I did well with it, but I have forgotten so much in these next 20 years. The 135 started acting up and digital was coming out, and we shared a couple until 2008 when....

..... I was given the SD950. They had considered a small DSLR for me but since I did a lot of hiking and biking, thought I would enjoy something I could put in my pocket (and I did). They also had a DSLR and when I went away later that year, I took both and didn't enjoy the different lenses and riding with the DSLR around my neck was more difficult. Obviously the long lenses did things the SD950 couldn't do.

Over the years I learned to work with the limitations of the SD950 and photography friends were always surprised at some of my prints when they found out what I used.

In 2013 when I was taking another trip, I came here to research, and checked out a friends SX40, and ended up buying the SX50.

How time flies! It's now 2022. My original SX 50 was warrantied in 2015 but I am still using it and I wonder what I will replace it with. There are a lot of pix on that shutter.

Types of pix I take:

  • landscapes
  • architecture (sometimes inside when doing documentation)
  • birds
  • birds in flight
  • flowers
  • backyard wildlife

The SX50 doesn't do well in low light. To this day I cannot figure out the manual focus for long distance when it doesn't like to autofocus.

I have done the obligatory moon shots. I'd love to do stars but read the SX50 is not so good at that either.

BIF are challenging. I went on a bird watch in October. They occasionally post pix to fb and some are beyond my wildest expectations, but I know one of the guys has a killer setup.

Landscapes I think it's pretty good at, but I do wonder if some of my October foliage pix would have been better with something else.

Some days I feel I am not worthy of a complicated DSLR. i.e. In 2020 I learned about the 2x converter shortcut and loved it. In 2021 I learned that when one pixel peeps, the 2x converter shortcut is not the best solution. As much as I love photography there are times I don't touch my camera for weeks and things fall out of my head.

Last night I was poking around Canon's refurbished offerings and saw the RF600/800 lenses. They sound amazing and the price looked good to me. But I think they go to a pretty expensive body?

I'd love some idea on where to start looking. I am going to guess a DSLR would be a second camera, not a full replacement as I know good lenses are really expensive. I know I can rent to try, and I do have a good camera shop within 20 miles. I just need a direction to head in.

Budget: honestly not sure yet. I know this is well beyond the SX series pricing.

I'm not opposed to other brands but I'm familiar with the Canon menus and have been fairly happy with them.

Thank you!
