agreed. I imagine most smart TV's support h.264/avi/mp4 format if you plop them on a thumb drive that's formatted fat32 or similar.

If the files were converted from old tapes like that, they'd likely be in DVD (mpeg2) or standard mpeg format.  I'd go out on a limb and say any TV that supports playback of video from USB will support those.

and some smart TV's can access video files from a computer (google the app called Serviio) - that's how I often watch movies on my Samsun TV from my computer on the same network.

But one of the easiest methods that will 100% work with any smart TV.. is to simply upload your movies to youtube!
