Here's my experience, in case it adds another small piece of data to our understanding:

I bought an M6ii used from Henry's and it was in 10/10 condition, identical to my new one.  I programmed the date and time and spent about 30 minutes setting up the menu, then powered it off.  The next day I swapped the battery out and when I powered it on I was asked to program the date and time again, which I did.  I thought "uh oh, something is wrong here - I may need to return this." However, since the day after, it has kept its memory, despite having had 7-10 battery swaps.

My unproven hypothesis is that the camera was sitting in storage with the main battery removed for some months while it was at Henry's waiting to be sold, and the clock battery had been depleted.  When I first got the camera I didn't use it for long enough to charge up that battery, so the next day when I swapped out the main battery it lost its settings.  But later, after the main battery had been in the camera for another day or two, the internal battery became fully charged and now keeps the date and time.
