Are close-up filters effective on shorter lenses?

Hi there,

I'm a complete novice to macro photography equipment and I was wondering about how effective close-up filters can really be if used with a non-telephoto lens.

From what I can tell, achromatic close-up filters like a raynox or Marumi work well with telephoto lenses for macro work. That said, I can't find much information about whether a high quality close-up filter would still produce good levels of sharpness or magnification if used with a much shorter lens.

In my specific case, I have a fixed 50mm portrait lens (75mm focal length) with a 1:3 macro ability, but I'm also curious about if these filters might work with wide angle lenses. Would it be a waste? And if not, does anyone know a close-up filter that might work best at the 75mm focal length?

Cheers!

GB.
