Re: 50mm FOV lens for APS-C?

I like crop format more. I started my photography business with 7D and made some wonderful portraits and action shots with it.
Yeah I like crop too. I use my 90D a lot, but for 50mm equivalent I always tend to reach for the full frame. I use the 50 STM1.8 and the 50 1.4. I also use these on film cameras which biases me to full frame format.
Yeah, well, it's true that 50mm has a certain character on 35mm film or FF. I kind of want to try to recreate something similar and see how it goes on APS. Sort of like doing portraits with 50mm (80mm) lens on Crop instead of 85mm on FF... that's a bit unconventional length, but works for me.
That's an option, certainly, and similar DOF as on crop (f3.2 -> f2 on crop) but I'm trying to avoid 5d4 wherever I can now and build a complete Crop setup for me. Before you ask why, it's weight and size + I love getting used to one system at a time (Crop).
But I also thought, if I buy 35mm f2 IS, I could also use it on both cameras if needed and benefit from both FOVs.
Yes I find the 5D series too heavy as well. I sold mine (5D3) and shifted to 6D, and then 6D II, which is essentially a full frame 80D/90D. Same size and ergonomics as the crop camera.
If I could turn back the time in that sense, I wouldn't shelled out over 3k euros on 5dmkIV body, that's for sure. Instead, I'd much rather spend half of that money on a nice f1.2/1.4 lens, 50 or 35mm, keeping my old 7D2. Or, as you pointed out, buy 6D if FF was still an option, for half of the price I paid for 5d.
Uh, that's one of my concerns also... The main one is AF consistency, as Sigma was notorious for being "odd". Not sure how 18-35 behaves with Canon 90D though. But I am afraid to invest into that lens, only to pull my hair out if it doesn't work as I wanted it to.
If you want a lighter setup don't buy that lens.
To try out, buy some lenses 2nd hand. Then sell them. You always get what you paid. That's what I did with the 18-35. I wanted to try it out, but quickly realised I'd never use it, so on it went to the next owner.
Thanks for the tip. You're right. I won't, unless I find a nice 2nd hand copy to try it out.
