I think the OP means peaking, as in clipped over modulated audio that sounds distorted.

Some suggestions for the OP:

When recording, the audio meter on your camera should average -12dB.

Once you have the files in your editing software, apply compression (evening out the volume, not reducing file size), De-essing, and other equalization.

Before exporting, normalize your audio level to whatever Instagram specifies (they may use the LUFS scale rather than decibels).

Alex Knickerbocker has some excellent tutorials that are well worth watching. You might not be using the same software, but the theory and principles still apply.
