30-110 lens error. Advice?

I have a 30-110mm which has sat unused for a good long while. I put it on a camera body and it initially seemed to work fine, but as I zoomed to a longer  focal length, of about 80mm, the dreaded lens error popped up on the screen. If I shut the camera off and go back to a shorter focal length, the lens works, at least at that focal length and lower. I also was able to get the lens to work at 110mm by turning the camera off, gently zooming all the way to 110mm, and turning it back on. I feel pretty confident that the lens with keep causing an error if I zoom through the 80mm area. I imagine this is an indication that the cable inside the lens in  on its way out. Any advice? Is there anything I might be able to do short of taking it apart and replacing the cable? Are the cables in these the same as in the 10-30? I'm considering repairing one or two of the 10-30s I own.
