I'm a "never" had a lockup. Purchased R5 in May, 2021. Couldn't find a source with stock of the RF 100-500 L and bought a Canon adapter to use my Sigma 150-600 C while waiting to find a 100-500 without paying a huge premium over list.
The camera worked wonderfully with the Sigma and I updated firmware to 1.4.0 without incident.
When I got the RF 100-500 in mid-December, my town got a huge load of bad weather so I wasn't using it much at all. I upgraded to firmware 1.5.0 without incident. I changed minor things in the AF setup based on others' setups in Youtube videos but nothing stands out as shockingly different from what I used before.
I have a Sony Cfexpress "Tough" Memory Card 128GB and a Prograde Digital SD UHS-II 64GB Card V90.
I formatted the cards in the Camera originally and when using them for upgrading firmware and when deleting images. I have barely used the SD card for anything--it sits there "in case" I run out of CFexpress space.
I'm up to ~10,000 images over the time from May, 2021 to Jan 31, 2022. A low count for me due to our unfortunate loss of the local Peregrine pair in June. A new pair is around and hopes run high for Spring to work its magic.
Don
Hi Don, I am in your camp. I have had my R5 since the end of March '21. I have used it with many EF lenses and the Sigma 150-600 c and the Sigma TC1401. I have not had any lockups. Unlike Don I have probably taken at least 20K images. I have three RF lenses the 24-105 f4, RF 100-400 and the RF 800 f11. I also use a lot of EF L lenses. I use a Sandisk extreme pro 256 CF card and a RitzGear Video pro v60 256 SD card. I have shot 4K video up to 30 minutes and have shot a lot of RAW images in hot weather and I have not had any over heating or warnings. I am also on the latest firmware.
My only suggestions for those who have a lot of lock-ups is to document the process. Take pictures with your phone showing that it is locked up and after having several of these send them and the camera to Canon.
Would it be possible to keep a sticky post here linked to a google doc and every time someone has a lockup they post details, modes, batteries, Grip, EF or RF, type of card, etc... Maybe we could start spotting some patterns that we could send to Canon.
