Thank you to those who provided advice. I bought the Tamron, and it seems promising, though makes me want the 17-28 to go with it.

It wasn't really a 200 mm sort of day yesterday and I mostly had the lens on an IR converted camera, so only one of these is at 200mm.

FS converted Sony A7R2 with STC 720nm clip-in filter, Tamron 28-200 @200mm

It could be a bit sharper, but that could well be my handholding. Topaz Sharpen AI diagnoses motion blur, so I will have to test it on a tripod one day (I doubt I have the steadiest hands). But this sharpened up well enough, so I think the lens is fine.

Its a bit off topic, but I also include one at 28mm, which seems good at the edges, even when not reduced to a small size for the web.
