NAS RAID Configuration

I am a fine art photographer looking at NAS as a way to archive and access images remotely.

I am thinking of Synology DiskStation DS420+ (4 bays).

However, I'm confused about the best RAID set up.

I understand the best options for me seem to be RAID 5 and 6.

My questions are--forgive me if they are basic:

  1. What are practical differences, such as time to up/download files locally to NAS?
  2. Should/must all drives be the same size?
  3. How do I make backups. For example, in RAID 5 and 6, do I remove one drive to store off-site?
  4. What size drives do I need if I have about 6TB of data? I.e., do I need 6TBx4?

More information:

  • I shoot RAW files of about 30 MB files
  • TIFFs with layers could be 2-3GB files
  • I have about 5TB of images currently
  • Workflow is: take photo; download to computer; edit; upload to NAS for storage; retrieve from NAS occasionally

Any tips or suggestions are welcome!

Thanks, Steve
