Re: I agree, it is an excellent lens

A quick update:

I did a pair of runs at 105 and 135mm at near MFD against the 105MC macro (unfair test) and the 135/2 Apo Sonnar (also, unfair test). Yep - the zoom definitely loses ground when you're at MFD. The coarse structures (contrast) is maintained, but the mid and fine structure performance definitely takes a hit. At about 6-8 feet things improve quite a bit. I probably wouldn't be using this one at MFD myself, but it might be usable dependent on your tolerance for things. It ain't a macro lens.

Thanks for the MFD check Mike.  My 100-400 is still backordered, but when it arrives the most closeup magnification I would need would be for occasional flower portraits.  In that case I will definitely back off a bit from MFD.  Thanks again.

Won't know if I'll have time to look at the other focal lengths...

Creating art is not enough; it needs to be shared. Sharing demands that you reveal who you are as an artist and how technically inclined you are. To share, you must be, on some level, vulnerable in front of your friends, family, and peers. There's no reward without risk. I suggest being vulnerable and taking that risk. - Jason Bradley
