A quick update:

I did a pair of runs at 105 and 135mm at near MFD against the 105MC macro (unfair test) and the 135/2 Apo Sonnar (also, unfair test). Yep - the zoom definitely loses ground when you're at MFD.  The coarse structures (contrast) is maintained, but the mid and fine structure performance definitely takes a hit. At about 6-8 feet things improve quite a bit. I probably wouldn't be using this one at MFD myself, but it might be usable dependent on your tolerance for things. It ain't a macro lens.

Won't know if I'll have time to look at the other focal lengths...
