Hi,
so I ended up with:
1.) a cheap hard case for the iPhone, this is always useful as a fallback to me.
2.) on iPhone vs GoPro vs akaso vs TG6, I ended up with a GoPro hero 7 silver used. It was only 50 bucks more than the akaso option with presumably vastly superior software. I do think the TG6 is a great option, but it’s perhaps a bit more deliberate and probably diving oriented. Footage seemed at least a notch below the GoPro, and if I am getting strobes, I’d rather use them with full frame. The tg5 used is also 2x the price of the GoPro.
3.) I am intending to get a seafrogs housing for my a7riv, with a dome port for the 16-35. I realise this may not work in practice, the biggest issue I think would be dragging it along for a snorkeling session, at least in a group session without vastly improved fin action. Recommendation on fins? I have come to the conclusion that macro and snorkeling does not seem to make for an easy combination. The downside is that all these three options would be wide angle.
Great, you are really dedicated to go in all directions...
the gear is comparatively cheap to the holidays, so worth it to be well equipped
regarding 3.) my personal experience is tha the UW-camera (on a tray), held in both hands, is not really an obstacle: when snorkeling (nowadays called "Apnoe"), I hold my hands and arms anyway in front of my head, it does not really make a difference whether they hold a camera with tray or nothing...
that's my feeling too, but it remains to be shown in practice. The hands don’t provide much propulsion, and the heft would be a stabilising factor. There are moments though, when you are getting from one place to another, using hands, where the camera would be an obstacle
Have fun!
