AF lock

This will be a dumb question to many, but....

If I use AF on a tripod mounted wide angle lens (24.14) for a Landscape picture and I take my hand of the focus button (I use back button focus), will the camera then "hunt" for a new Focus point ?

I would like to hold the Focus so that I can trigger the camera with a cable release

I know the lens has a Focus lock button, is it as simple as pressing this and then letting go ? Will it hold the Focus point, or is there another setting in camera I need to enable ?

Thanks
