A few more from Bosque del Apache & some notes

I spent an afternoon/evening at the reserve last week & returned the next morning before sunrise & spent the morning there.

- There aren't a lot of snow geese left, but still enough for a nice dawn lift-off. It isn't as dramatic as those in December (I'm told). I've seen better at Lamar CO.

- There were very few Sandhill cranes while I was there.

- Now the good news : Lots of water fowl. Northern Pintails, canvasbacks, ruddy ducks, buffleheads, pied-billed grebes etc.

- Lots of birds at the desert arboretum near the visitor center

- Lots of raptors - RTH, northern harriers, kestrels. Also saw a couple of Bald Eagles.

ebirds.org will obviously be a better source of species spotted.

I enjoyed the trails - especially the Marsh overlook trail and the John Taylor trail. Next time, I'll also do the trails west of Rt 1.

Male Gambel's Quail

Female Gambel's Quail

Curve-billed Thrasher

Pied-billed Grebe

Northern Pin-tails

Cooper's Hawk. It flew so fast & close through the bushes that we felt the air displaced by the wings.
