1.4x TC with 70-300mm test shots

How effective is the 1.4x TC with the 70-300mm? I'm not sure it adds much TBH.

Following are shots taken with an X-S10 handheld , IBIS and OIS on, base ISO, with fixed aperture (f8) and shutter (1/320), and SOOC JPGs. Strictly I should have used a tripod with stabilisations off etc, but I was careful to hold steady and squeeze the shutter, and took two frames in each case and compared for camera shake. I also tried the 70-300mm at f5.6, but couldn't see any major difference compared with f8.

I'm interested if anyone can see any differences I've missed here, or your own experience with this setup. These results are just one data point using my particular copies and methodology; YMMV.

Cheers,
Mark

300mm:

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 214mm (300.2mm) vs 70-300mm @ 300mm

In this case, I couldn't see much difference. At least the teleconverter appears to not significantly impact the image here.

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 214mm (300.2mm)

70-300mm @ 300mm

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 214mm (300.2mm)

70-300mm @ 300mm

420mm:

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 300mm (420mm) vs 70-300mm @ 300mm cropped 1.4 (420mm)

In this case, somewhat surprisingly, the cropped images (without TC) appear to be slightly sharper, with a little bit more contrast and less colour fringing. Not a lot in it though.

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 300mm (420mm)

70-300mm @ 300mm cropped 1.4 (420mm)

1.4x TC + 70-300mm @ 300mm (420mm)

70-300mm @ 300mm cropped 1.4 (420mm)
