Nectar eaters from Western Australia's south west
30

I returned home yesterday from 10 days in the south west working on a long-distance walking trail where, before and after work each day I was able to capture some of the local nectar eaters.

Male Western Spinebill on Green Kangaroo Paw. This bird is slightly smaller than the New Holland Honeyeater and with a fantastically long curved bill. Photographing this cautious bird is a real treat.

Female Western Spinebill. Note the tongue extended from the bill, just made for extracting nectar from deep inside Kangaroo Paw.

New Holland Honeyeater against a dreamy background. There seems to have been an explosion in their numbers this year; if so must be due to the long wet winter. However, we're having a brutally hot summer now with Perth breaking its record with 6 consecutive day over 40C.  Glad I was down on the comparatively cooler south coast.
