EPHOTOZINE REVIEW

The first real review came out on the much-talked-about Z 100-400/4.5-5.6 S VR lens. Here are some cliff notes:

  • Insanely sharp, especially for a zoom.
  • Sharpest results @ 100mm
  • Worst results @ 400mm
  • Sharpness falls off dramatically as the lens extends — and yet
  • 400mm is still very sharp (slightly sharper than the 70-200 is @ 200 mm)
  • CA control/rendering is very good, but not as sublime as the 70-200

All-in-all looks like it's worth the money for sure, considering the range, and especially considering extreme reproduction ratio: .38x.

Haven't read the review but returned mine.  I ordered it at the same time I ordered the Z9 (my first mirrorless camera) since I had no camera to use it on.  Also, in reflection, I realized that I mostly need a long lens and/or one that is better in low light than my 500mm PF, which I use much of the time with a 1.4TC.  The 100-400mm doesn't get me further or better low light abilities.  Will have to wait for either the 800mm f/6.3 or 400mm PF.
