To a certain extent, the R3 is a much better body for birds/wildlife. However, I think a 600mm prime or something near equivalent is a must to make this a true statement. The only way I would pick up the R3 is if I owned a 600 f/4 and there is no way I could afford both of them in the next five years or more.

So, unless you are in a situation where most of what you shoot is from a blind, I would not think about the R3 without a high quality 600-800 prime. The resolution is just not there.

This is assuming that one of your primary interests is small song birds.
