The difference between those two settings is pretty subtle to me -- care to fill me in?

AUTO will switch to DR200 in bright light when it thinks it needs to, but won’t drastically affect the contrast otherwise.

D-Range Priority not only automatically takes control of DR (as above), but also takes control of your jpeg contrast controls as well (Shadows and Highlights) and can radically reduce contrast when it kicks in - as you have discovered.
Personally, I think it’s best to just expose correctly for the highlights in the first place and stick with DR100 (DR modes off, no surprises).
